Analysis of Novella from The Legend Of Sleepy Hollow

a)      Theme

The theme of this novella is talking about folktale of New York.

b)     Plot

This novella use of forward plot, because ration of  this story told from orientation, evaluation, complication, and the lash is resolution.

c)      Structure

Ø  Beginning: This story begin from the farmers of Tarry Town talking about in Sleepy Hollow every night three was Horseman without his head. And than talking about who was Ichabod???

Ø  Middle: Ichabod falling in love with Katrina Van Tassel,and he want katrina became his wife, but there was someone with named Brom Van Brunt came with his charming, make Katrina and women at the town like with him.

Ø  Ending: Ichabod lost with mysteriously, and Katrina and Brom married and happy.

d)     Exposition

Ø  Conflict: The begin from Ichabod falling in love with Katrina, but because there was Brom, so Ichabod affront for winning Katrina’s heart.  

Ø  Climax: Ichabod and Katrina dance together in a party, make Brom was jealous.

Ø  Resolution: because Ichabod lost without mark so Brom and katrina got married.

e)      Characters of Participants

Ø  Ichabod Crane: he  had a soft and foolish heart for the ladies.

Ø  Katrina Van Tassel: She had a soft attitude and

Ø  Brom Van Brunt: Because strong young man, he was hero to all the young ladies, his shoulders were big but he was very like touch the tired old ladies with leading his wild group.

Ø  Physical setting: in a village Tarry Town of New York State.

Ø  Chronological setting: Many years ago after American Revolutionary war.

This story used The Third person because the writer didn’t became participant in story, but he knew the all characters the participants.

h)      Style and Tone (Atmosphere)

The atmosphere of this story is to tell about the physical  wares from Ichabod and Brom to got heart of Katrina.

i)        Symbol

There are some sentence that symbol had meaning:

Ø  ‘’He heard  a noise’’, to told because he was afraid.

Ø  ‘’Ichabod’s eyes opened wide when he saw the riches’’, to told because Ichabod felt interest with someone (Katrina).
